Our load of straw came yesterday.  Beautiful big, tight bales of golden colored straw    We'll be selling it for nine dollars a bale.  It is almost time to mulch your strawberries.  I mulch shallow rooted perennials because we have so much freezing and thawing in the fall.  The straw mulch keeps the soil temperature consistent so the roots don't get torn by heaving soil.  I mulch my roses too.  Straw makes a warmer bedding than hay so I switch to straw for the hens when it gets cold.  They get so excited when I put straw in.
When I fed the birds I noticed a small hole dug under the banking.  I filled it with cayenne pepper. Even if it is too small to be a skunk I don't want any rodents under my kitchen.
May your day be blessed, Sally
