As day dawned yesterday I was disappointed to see lots of ice. Enough was gone so I could. with the help of ashes and walking carefully , safely get to the greenhouse and barn. The sun shone, the south wind blew and by late afternoon enough ice had left so I could easily walk on bare ground. I plugged in the furnace and started the wood stove early. Thanks to the sunshine on the greenhouse I had to let the wood stove go out because the greenhouse temperature was over eighty.
Bekah took several trays of seedlings from the house to the greenhouse. She put them in the middle where they would be warmest. Jay filled the soil barrels. We were amazed that the bales of soil were mostly thawed. They ran water, mostening the soil in the barrels and filling barrels and buckets with water. They were thankful for such a warm day for the first time putting out the hose. All the kinks are out, running water will go faster next time. A good thing, there is not another day that warm in the forecast.
I stayed in the house with Violet. She played happily for quite a while. Then she crawled up on the couch and took a nap. A visiting nurse came out and took blood to check her numbers.
Winter came in last night with steady twenty to thirty mile per hour winds and forty plu mph gusts. lights flickered but never went off. The pine tree held strong. I didn't put wood on the wood stove, I let the propane furnace keep the greenhouse warm. I didn't even want to drive the truck under the pine tree, let alone walk under it. Earlier when I gave the hens the evening scratch it wasn't blowing as hard and I had to keep bracing myself against the gusts.
Not sure what today will bring besides easy walking with no ice. May God be with you, Sally
