Quiet, pleasant winter weather Wednesday, the 24, through the weekend.
Darel had a good day yesterday.  Church in the morning and lots of football to watch in the afternoon.  I minced around on the ice when I had to take care of the hens and feed the birds.  The ice is so hard that even with my spiked boots on I could slide, the spikes just didn't dig in.  I'll be glad to get some snow on it Wednesday.  When we came home from church i made sure the hans water wasn't froze and even though I wasn't the one who stayed up watching football, I took a nap.
I spent a long time reading up on phenology.  Our weather is so different from year to year that suggested planing dates aren't much help.  But the plants know what the weather is so " plant peas when the forsythia blooms" may be more helpful than a date.  I've always taken the sight of the first dandelion as a sign to get the potatoes planted.  I'm one of those who say "don't set out warm weather crops until after the full moon."  There is a full moon May 29th this year.  A lot of people aren't going to want to wait that long.  I'll need plenty of seedlings in case people have to replant.
I don't believe i'm exaggerating when I say we have a flock of 100 plus finches.  I don't know where they've been but they sure have found their way to the sunflower seeds.  The snow id very hard, I'm just throwing the seeds out on the crust.  The ground cover I have planted under the dogwood tree will be well fertilized.  Even the blue jays and the doves back off when they come in.
       Have a good day, Sally
