Yesterday Jay spotted a browntail moth nest in one of the apple trees. When he went to cut it out and drop it in a pail of soapy water he found out the tree next to it was full of moths. and the crab apple tree on the front lawn. and some of the trees in the orchard. Off to Home Depot I went to spend money we didn't plan on spending for a backpack sprayer. We had an organic spray for sale in the store. They waited until after sunset and started spraying. They waited until after sunset so the bees would all be back in the hive. They finished spraying with flash lights. Today they will check the fruit trees around the cemetery. I guess we could say it was a good day because they spotted the moths and eractied them before they had a chance to do much damage to the trees. Tent caterpillars were mixed in. We usually just tear the tent caterpillar nest open and the birds eat them. But the birds won't eat the brown tail moths. They carefully laid plastic over the plants in the display area today they will just as carefully make sure the moths are gathered and put in pellet bags in the dumpster. Even dead moths can shed irritating hairs. A lot of extra work they didn't need right now!
Lots of plants left yesterday. Others were moved outside. The greenhouses will be too hot tomorrow. More will be moved out today. And we will all be planting. There is lots of moisture in the soil but we are planting everything with soaker hoses just in case it turns dry.
May God bless you on this day, Sally
