I only have half my tomatoes planted. The other half are still in the greenhouse being pampered. With the cold windy forecast I may not plant them until next Saturday. Days and nights like the ones the end of this week are why my cucumbers are covered with remay. Because I check each plant for cucumber beetles as I plant it and put remay (agriculture fabric) on the row as soon as I finish planting it, I don't have to worry about the beetles or the cold. I buy remay in 250 foot rolls but we sell it in 8x 20 pieces.
After closing yesterday I started planting. I got all the summer broccoli and cauliflower planted, all the cabbage and the first planting of Brussel sprouts. It was just starting to sprinkle as I finished. This morning my back is complaining about so many hours of planting but I am so pleased to have gotten the plants in before the rain I don't care. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow, she can straighten me out! I sold so many Brussel sprout seedlings I only had 35 for myself. We've started more, they are up. In a few weeks I'll have some to sell and some to plant. Last year I stacked a pile of sprouts in the barn, enough so the chickens got a stalk of sprouts everyday into March. They loved them so I'm going to do the same this year.
We love the red buttercrunch lettuce called firecracker. The seed didn't germinate this spring. When I tried to order more Johnny's said it was not available. Last night I found a patch of it in the garden where last year's plants had gone to seed. Today I am going to dig up the small ones and replant them in six packs. Several customers have been asking for it. Since the plants are coming up in Carol's glads I'll move other seedlings to a row for us. The wet soil and clouds make this a perfect day to do it.
Enjoy your day, Sally
