This flu had me up during the night so I slept in. When I got up the house was chilly so I turned up the pellet stove and got the cook range burning hotter. As I opened the back door to carry the ashes out, a barn cat dove through the door into the house. Apparently it decided it had enough of the cold. The two house cats and the dog did not take kindly to her invading their space. The yowling and barking was horrendous. The back door is on a spring. That cat hit that door running and was gone. Jay and Bekah were wide awake!
Wind had blown the sunflower seed all over the place. Some of the birds will be happy to find seeds in the bushe, others prefer the feeders. I filled the feeders. After yesterday the birds will be hungry. Today will be a good day for them. The forecast says they will come to the feeders early tomorrow so I'll make sure they are full tonight. It was too windy to fill them last night.
When there is a wintery mix and wind we start the greenhouse fires so the plastic doesn't ice up. So far this winter that hasn't been necessary. The forecast for late tomorrow and tomorrow night sounds like a good time to run the furnaces. That will prevent ice buildup and be a pre season check of the greenhouse furnaces.
I ordered and paid for our spring chicks yesterday. Not only are chicks expensive this year but there is a shortage. Enough breeding flocks have been wiped out due to the bird flu to cause a shortage of chicks. That is why I ordered early and prepaid. We raised the price of our eggs to five dollars. Not only is the price of replacements high but this consistent cold has caused a drop in production. The hens are eating as much grain but they are using it to stay warm instead of to make eggs. We make sure they have lots of fluffy dry bedding and Bekah gives them fresh ice free water during the day but they are still affected by the cold. Four dozen eggs left already this morning. We are running out of eggs so they come early to be sure they can get some.
May your day be blessed, Sally
