Yesterday was a pleasant day but not enough breeze to deter the blackflies.  They were vicious in places.  Lots of them in the cemetery.  The lack of pollinators on the blossoms is concerning.  Just our new bees and a few bumblebees.  I did not see a bee on the apple blossoms in the cemetery.  The pears bloomed during the bad weather so they weren't pollinated but yesterday was sunny.  The horse chestnut is in bloom.  Usually the hum of pollinators is so loud that is all you can hear when you're under the tree.  Just a quiet hum this year.  Jay has ordered bees for a second hive.  They will be here around the 1st.  We have very few swallows this year.
Gilbert gambles on the weather, Planting cucumbers early, putting them in black plastic and covering them with remay.  Most years his gamble pays off with lots of cucumbers by July 4th.  Not this year,  After ten days of cloudy, cold, wet weather they looked fine but Friday's nor'easter was too much for a lot of the plants.  He planted more yesterday.  Jay is planting his cucumber plants today.  He made the beds last week so the soil will be warm.  He would have liked to have planted them 3 or 4 days ago.  The plants were smaller, easier to plant without disturbing the roots.  Everyone will be putting in long days trying to catch up.
May your day be blessed, Sally
