A pleasant day for the beginning of Open Greenhouse Week. There are lots of blooms for the hummingbirds to visit. Over the years the earliest hummingbirds have returned is May 4th. My plan was to put the feeders out yesterday afternoon until Jay saw two hummingbirds flying around the shepherd's hook looking for their feeder. Even though I was taking a chance on being late for church I made hummingbird food and set the pan in cold water to cool why I found the feeders. As soon as they were filled and out there were male hummingbirds feeding. I think the males must come back first. I read yesterday that if a platform feeder was put in an area of dense bushes cardinals would feed at it and the blackbirds wouldn't because they don't like to go into the bushes. Last night the cardinals and little birds were all at the feeder. This morning the blackbirds are. Sounded like a good idea!
I'm cleaning out flower beds. Anything that wintered over in them has had enough warmth to hatch. Some perennials are showing. It will be weeks before the hibiscus shows any signs of life. It appears that the phlox in the memorial garden aren't coming back. I have phlox in several places, all the others are growing. I had liatris there a few years back and it died out. That garden gets a lot of water off the garage roof. There was a lot of rain last winter, I think they may have drowned. I have spring bulbs there, they do fine. I plant petunias there summers and they love all the moisture.
I need to make door prize entries for Open Greenhouse Week. Then I'm going to try to smother the dandelions in my strawberries with newspapers and straw. May your day be blessed, Sally
