Darel had a quiet day yesterday with not much going on. Probably just as well, his pulse was very low last night. We did take a ride to church to leave off the Sunday School lesson. Heather and Mike were here in the afternoon.
I think I've mentioned before the Heather and mike provided some of the vegetables for the stand this summer. They have a beautiful organic garden, successfully growing things I haven't grown very well. Tender carrots and sweet melons. Enough peaches to sell some. This summer they are going to grow more of the vegetables for the stand, allowing me to cut back some. I do better at cucumbers so I'll continue to grow them. It seems to work well for me to have tubs of herbs by the stand so they can be cut fresh for the customer. Heather and Mike are able to produce more vegetables and fruit of higher quality than I can. I think I may plant more flowers for cutting but overall I'll be doing less.. Since i start plants to sell to customers who have their own gardens i will start most of the plants.
Last year Heather and Mike bought produce over on Friday afternoons. We met at the Creamery on Wednesdays for a mid week delivery. I grew enough of some things so I could fill in. Some weeks at the height of the season they made extra deliveries.
Are you wondering how they are so successful with melons. They set out large plants the third week in June. The plants are planted in black plastic with a soaker hose. The rows of melon plants are covered with remay. They don't take the remay off until the vines start pushing it off or there are blossoms that the bees need to pollinate.
Yesterday we ordered seeds, decided on plant numbers and set planting dates. Spring will be here before we know it. Today I will get the trays ready to plant wave petunia and pansy seed.. And we are going to try to grow some lettuce inside for ourselves. One of our goals is to have very early lettuce. Our lettuce is better than the stores and no recalls! It would be nice if we could offer lettuce when the asparagus is ready.
Have a good day, Sally
